Topps Inception Cards: What the Patch and Plain Autos Sell For
If you pulled a good one and you're thinking about a slab, our walkthrough on whether a card is worth grading sets the fee against the raw price, and on a five-dollar auto the fee wins. If you're paying a monthly bill just to look up Topps Inception comps, the CardLadder alternatives breakdown shows who charges what.
Inception is the box that's one pack. Seven cards, one of them signed, everything on that foil stock. It's the Topps one, by the way, not the Bowman prospect product with the same name, and not the football set coming back with the NFL license this fall, which we already priced in our 2026 Topps Inception football preview. This page is baseball, with a section on basketball. The question I kept coming back to is simple: when the one auto in your box is a patch auto instead of a plain auto, how much better did you actually do? We matched every player who has both and the answer is pretty consistent, about double.
What is Topps Inception, and when did the 2025 baseball edition come out?
It's a premium Topps release built around rookie and young-star autographs. Our catalog has the baseball line every year from 2017 through 2025, plus basketball, soccer and football editions. For the two latest baseball sets, Checklist Insider's 2024 page and its 2025 page (both read ) give the details. The 2024 edition came out at $219.99 a box. The 2025 edition came out at $249.99. Both are one pack of seven cards with one autograph or autograph relic, and the 2025 checklist has 100 base cards, 25 short prints and 88 Rookies and Emerging Stars autographs.
One honest gap. Our catalog has all 3,646 rows of the 2025 baseball set filed, but none of them carries a price yet. The cards are trading, I can see 2025 Skenes autos in the September eBay sales, the prices just haven't landed in the catalog. So everything below is 2017 to 2024, and I'll come back and add 2025 when it fills in.
How much are Topps Inception rookie autographs worth by year?
The plain Rookies and Emerging Stars autograph is the card you're most likely to pull, so that's the table. Plain means no color in the card name, one card per player per year. The 2017 to 2019 and 2021 sets used different autograph lines that barely show up in our pricing, so those years are left out rather than guessed at.
| Year | Players priced | Median raw | Under $10 | $100 or more | Recorded sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 74 | $5.10 | 52 | 2 | 184 |
| 2022 | 81 | $4.00 | 60 | 3 | 268 |
| 2023 | 98 | $5.82 | 57 | 2 | 811 |
| 2024 | 82 | $14.53 | 29 | 6 | 2,689 |
Four to six bucks is normal for anything older than a year. The 2024 class is the exception, near fifteen, and it's also traded more than the other three years put together. I'd guess that's Skenes and Yamamoto and De La Cruz pulling the whole set up while it's still fresh, the same thing we see on most young autograph sets before the class sorts itself out.
Does the patch auto beat the plain auto for the same player?
Yes, and this is the part I'd actually use. For every player who has both a plain Rookies and Emerging Stars auto and a plain Autograph Patch card in the same year, we divided the patch price by the auto price and took the median. Both cards needed at least three recorded sales. For basketball we used the Rookie Jumbo Relic Autograph against the Rookie Autograph, which is the closest match that set has.
| Set | Players matched | Plain auto median | Patch auto median | Median multiple | Patch priced higher |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 baseball | 43 | $9.99 | $20.86 | 2.35x | 42 of 43 |
| 2024 baseball | 38 | $19.85 | $43.16 | 2.16x | 36 of 38 |
| 2024 basketball (jumbo relic auto) | 14 | $4.54 | $10.52 | 1.71x | 12 of 14 |
That's about as clean a result as you get in cards. The patch wins 78 times out of 81 in baseball, and by a steady two times or so. The medians in this table run higher than the year table above, by the way, because only players with a patch card got matched, and Topps gives patches to the better names. Basketball's gap is smaller, under two times, and the cards are cheaper to begin with.
For pricing, I'd treat the Inception patch auto as a cousin of the RPA. It's a rookie or young-star patch with an on-card signature, just from a mid-tier box with bigger print runs and softer patches than the flagship products. Our RPA explainer puts Inception in that mid-tier, and the prices here back that up. If you're weighing it against Topps Finest, which puts two autos in a box instead of one, our Topps Finest autographs page has what those sell for by color.
Does a lower print run make a Topps Inception card worth more?
Barely, and we've already measured it. Our print run versus value study found Topps Inception pays about 1.04 times for halving the print run, which rounds to nothing, and the lower-numbered card was cheaper in close to half the pairs. I won't redo that here. What it means in practice is that a color doesn't rescue a weak name in this product. A September sale shows it: a 2024 Skenes Rookies and Emerging Stars auto in Green, numbered to 125, sold for $290 on September 17, which is less than our catalog has for his plain auto. So I'd treat the plain Skenes number below as soft.
Which Topps Inception cards are worth the most?
The 2023 Shohei Ohtani Autograph Patch is the top card that trades, about $1,560 raw on 14 sales, with PSA 10 copies priced around $7,250. Behind it, the 2024 Paul Skenes Autograph Patch Card is near $990 on 17 sales. Then the jumbo patches and the Immersion autos of the same few names: Yamamoto's jumbo patch near $660 on 56 sales, Skenes's Immersion auto around $540 on 54.
On the plain autos, Skenes's 2024 card is priced near $455 raw on 48 sales, with the caveat above, and Yamamoto's near $440 on 20. Elly De La Cruz is near $400 but on eight sales, so take it as rough. Pete Crow-Armstrong's 2024 auto is around $220 on 33, and Cal Raleigh's 2022 card about $160 on 17. Junior Caminero is near $110 on 50. The most traded plain auto in the whole line is the 2024 Andy Pages, about $80 on 122 sales, which kind of tells you where the volume really is, a solid name at a price people will actually pay.
Base cards don't carry much. The plain base set runs about $1.60 to $2 a card in every year we can price well (2021 is too thin to count), so the box is about the autograph and the parallels, not the base.
What are Topps Inception basketball cards worth?
Basketball is newer and cheaper. The 2024 edition is the first one in our catalog with real depth (the 2021 cards are Overtime Elite and almost none are priced), and its plain autos are inexpensive. Across 83 players the median is about three dollars raw, 77 of them sit under ten, and not one plain auto reaches $100. Stephon Castle's Rookie Jumbo Relic Autograph is the busiest card, about $210 on 61 sales. Victor Wembanyama's Grail Chasing Signature is priced near $850, but on seven sales.
The 2025 basketball set is where the action is now. It's filed as 2025 in our catalog, the base cards are priced, and the autographs aren't priced yet. Cooper Flagg's base card #22 has 1,453 recorded sales, about $90 raw and $515 in a PSA 10. Dylan Harper's base is near $45, Wembanyama's around $28, and Kon Knueppel and LeBron James both near $20. Those are base cards, no auto, which is a lot for a base card. If you're working through Flagg's whole first-year run, the basketball prospect cards hub is the place to start.
Is a Topps Inception hobby box worth buying?
Sealed boxes have held up. Here's the catalog.
| Box | Sealed price | Recorded sales |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 baseball | about $205 | 9 |
| 2022 baseball | $225 | 42 |
| 2023 baseball | near $250 | 19 |
| 2024 baseball | $380 | 83 |
| 2024 basketball | roughly $175 | 99 |
| 2025 basketball | $498 | 851 |
A 2024 baseball box went for $219.99 on release and sells near $380 sealed now on 83 sales. Ripped, it's one autograph. At the median that's a fifteen-dollar card, about 7 percent of the release price. At the average, which already counts Skenes and Yamamoto, it's about $38. Checklist Insider lists the 2025 patch auto at 1 in 15 packs, and since a pack is a box, the patch you'd need to double your auto is a one-in-fifteen shot. That's the same gap our report on whether hobby boxes are worth it keeps finding. Bowman's version of the one-pack idea does no better, and our Bowman Inception breakdown has the two-auto math on that box.
How we built this page
Prices are raw (ungraded) catalog prices built from real sold prices, pulled October 3, 2026, plus PSA 10 prices where the catalog carries them. The year table uses the Rookies and Emerging Stars autograph set for each year, plain cards only (no color in the card name), one card per player per year, keeping the copy with the most recorded sales. The patch table matches a plain Autograph Patch card to the plain auto of the same player in the same year, both with at least three sales.
Box prices are sealed hobby boxes. Anything on fewer than ten recorded sales is flagged or rounded in the text, and we checked the Skenes figure against individual eBay sales from September 2026. Product dates and box contents come from the sources linked above. Nothing here is a projection.
