Bowman Inception Baseball Cards: What Two Autographs a Box Are Worth
Before you pay to grade one, our walkthrough on whether a card is worth grading sets the fee against the raw price, and for a four-dollar auto that's not close. If you're paying monthly just to look up Bowman Inception comps, the CardLadder alternatives breakdown shows who charges what.
Inception is the box that's basically one pack. Seven cards, two of them signed, all on that foil stock, and it costs close to two hundred bucks. I wanted to know what you actually get back for that, so we priced every Bowman Inception autograph set the catalog carries with any depth, matched every foil color to its plain auto, and put the two-auto box next to what those two autos sell for. The answer isn't great for the box, but it's useful if you're buying singles.
What is Bowman Inception, and is it still made?
It's a Topps baseball release under the Bowman name, built almost entirely around prospect autographs. Cardboard Connection's 2021 Bowman Inception page (read ) says the brand was last issued in 2016 and came back with a release date of , one seven-card pack per box and two autographs. Their 2022 page lists for that edition, with a 112-card Prospect Autographs checklist whose colors run from Blue /99 down to Red /5. And Checklist Insider's 2023 set page puts the 2023 edition at , same seven cards, two autos and a foil parallel.
So the year on the box runs about a year behind the calendar. Our catalog has the first run, 2013 to 2016, then 2021, 2022 and 2023, and nothing filed as Bowman Inception after that. I didn't find a later edition confirmed anywhere I'd trust, so I'm not going to guess at one. Topps Inception is a different product, by the way, and it isn't on this page. Its football edition comes back with the NFL license this fall, and we cover that one in our Topps Inception football preview. The baseball side of Topps Inception, one autograph a box and mostly rookies, has its own page in our Topps Inception autograph values.
How much are Bowman Inception autographs worth by year?
Not a lot, and it barely moves from one year to the next. The table keeps the plain autograph from the main prospect auto set for each year, no foil color in the name, one row per priced card.
| Year | Autographs priced | Median raw | Under $10 | $100 or more | Recorded sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | 33 | $5.79 | 22 | 0 | 352 |
| 2016 | 53 | $2.57 | 46 | 1 | 183 |
| 2021 | 103 | $2.45 | 89 | 0 | 993 |
| 2022 | 112 | $4.99 | 87 | 3 | 878 |
| 2023 | 109 | $4.32 | 80 | 1 | 1,113 |
Three to five bucks is the normal outcome. The 2021 set is the softest, 89 of 103 under ten dollars and none at $100, which kind of tells you how that prospect class aged. The 2016 set has one card carrying the whole thing, and you can probably guess who.
The 2014 and 2015 editions leaned on autograph relics and only a handful of those are priced, so they're left out. If the prospect side of the hobby in general is what you're sorting through, the baseball prospect cards hub puts Inception next to Bowman Chrome, Draft and Sterling.
What do two autographs return on a Bowman Inception box?
On the plain autos alone, no, and it isn't close. Our catalog prices the sealed hobby box near $187 for 2021 on 9 recorded sales, near $180 for 2022 on 39, and near $195 for 2023 on 26. Here's what two plain autos come to.
| Year | Sealed box | Two autos at the median | Two autos at the average | Plain autos worth half a box |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021 | $187.33 | $4.90 | $14.04 | 1 of 103 |
| 2022 | $179.98 | $9.98 | $25.58 | 3 of 112 |
| 2023 | $194.99 | $8.64 | $20.74 | 1 of 109 |
The average already counts the stars, so even a lucky-on-average box gets you twenty or so dollars of plain autos for close to two hundred. To pay the box back on one card, you need a plain auto worth $90 or better, which is roughly half the box, and only one to three names a year clear that. That's the same gap we found in our report on whether hobby boxes are worth it, and if anything the gap here is wider.
To be fair to the box, that's the floor. Plenty of the autos that come out are foil colors, and there are insert autographs (Primordial Prospects, Silver Signings, dual relics) on top. Those are what you're really paying for, I'd guess, and they're covered below. The point is that the plain auto, the most likely pull, doesn't carry the box.
Do Bowman Inception foil colors carry a premium?
The short ones do, and that's where most of the box's value hides. We paired every priced color with the plain auto of the same prospect and card number, then took the median multiple. The share column is how often the color is priced above its plain auto at all.
| Color | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | Priced above the plain auto (2023) | Median color price (2023) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | 1.53x | 1.07x | 1.24x | 66% | $5.98 |
| Fuchsia | 1.84x | 1.34x | 1.31x | 64% | $6.05 |
| Gold | 2.47x | 1.76x | 1.84x | 72% | $8.28 |
| Gold Electricity | not in set | not in set | 1.90x | 72% | $10.00 |
| Orange | 4.13x | 2.79x | 2.51x | 85% | $15.00 |
| Red | 17.34x | 6.24x | 5.14x | 88% | $33.44 |
Blue and Fuchsia are barely worth more than the plain auto, a dollar or two on a typical prospect. Gold roughly doubles it. Orange is where it starts to feel like a hit, around fifteen bucks for an ordinary name, and Red, the /5, is the real pull at five times and up. The 2021 Red multiple is huge mostly because the 2021 plain autos are so cheap, so I'd read it as Red holding its price while the plain cards sank. Our print run versus value study found the same thing across a lot of products: the number only starts paying once it gets small.
The 2023 FoilFractor one-of-ones have 15 priced in the catalog with a median near $106, but those are single sales of single cards, so treat that as a rough level and not a price.
Which Bowman Inception autographs are worth the most?
The prospects who became stars, which sounds obvious but the list is short. Among plain autos with at least five recorded sales, the 2016 Aaron Judge prospect auto leads at about $600 raw and $830 in a PSA 10 on 15 sales. That's the one card holding up the 2016 row.
From the recent run, Elly De La Cruz's 2022 prospect auto is near $245 raw and $375 in a PSA 10 on 20 sales, and his Silver Signings auto out of the same box is around $295. Roman Anthony's 2023 auto is near $140 raw on 27 sales, the most traded in that set. Then it drops to Carter Jensen around $120, Jackson Chourio near $110, Julio Rodriguez's 2021 auto near $96, and a cluster in the sixties to eighties: Spencer Jones, Jackson Holliday, Evan Carter, Jordan Walker, Chase DeLauter, Andrew Painter, Jackson Merrill and Bubba Chandler, who's the most traded of that group at 25 sales.
The insert autographs mostly run a little above the plain auto. Primordial Prospects had a median near $9 in 2022 and $10 in 2023, Silver Signings near $10 in 2022, and the dual relic autos near $10 to $20. The plain base cards without an autograph sit under two dollars every year, so nobody's buying the box for those.
How does Inception compare with the other premium Bowman boxes?
About where you'd expect for a premium box that isn't the 1st Bowman. Our Bowman Sterling price breakdown found plain prospect autos there selling for $2 to $4 too, out of an even pricier box, and the Bowman Platinum hub covers the cheaper end of the same family. Bowman's Best doubles the auto count to four a box, and our Bowman's Best values by year show those plain autos settling near three dollars once a class is a few years old. Unlicensed chrome autos are no better, and our Leaf Metal Draft autograph values show a similar three-to-six-dollar floor.
The card people chase at a premium is the first Bowman Chrome autograph, and if you're not sure why, the 1st Bowman card guide walks it through. An Inception auto of the same prospect is a nice card, but it isn't that card, and the prices above reflect it.
How we built this page
Prices are raw (ungraded) catalog prices built from real sold prices, pulled October 2, 2026, plus PSA 10 prices where the catalog carries them. Plain autographs come from the main prospect autograph set each year (Prospects Autographs in 2013, Prospect Autographs in 2016 and 2022, Autographs in 2021 and 2023). We read foil colors off the card name, and the color table only compares a color to the plain auto with the same prospect, card number and year.
The box math uses catalog sealed-box prices and the plain-auto median and average for that year, times two. It doesn't price the foil parallel or the insert autographs, which is why it's a floor. Product dates and box contents come from the sources linked above, and nothing here is a projection.
