Albert Pujols Rookie Cards: 2026 Values and Grades

BaseballPlayer hub2001 RC Updated

Quick Answer

Albert Pujols' flagship MLB rookie cards run through the 2001 cycle: Topps Traded #T247 is the most-cited base RC, Bowman Chrome Auto #340 is the on-card signature tentpole, Bowman #266 and Bowman Chrome non-auto are the Bowman base trio, and SP Authentic Future Watch /1250 #128 is the numbered SP. The 2022 700-club entry reset the comp lattice.

Why a Pujols hub at HobbyCardIndex

Albert Pujols was a 13th-round pick in the 1999 MLB Draft (402nd overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Maple Woods Community College. He made his major league debut on April 2, 2001, against the Colorado Rockies, hit .329 with 37 home runs and 130 RBI as a rookie, and won the 2001 NL Rookie of the Year unanimously. That late-draft, low-bonus, immediate-MVP-caliber-output arc is why every Pujols 2001 product carries a structural premium that the typical 13th-round draft pick never sees.

Pujols then strung together one of the most consistent first-decade runs in modern baseball history: three NL MVPs (2005, 2008, 2009), six top-five MVP finishes through 2010, two World Series rings (2006 and 2011), and a sustained 40-plus home run pace through age 30. After signing a 10-year free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels in December 2011, his Angels years compressed his card values as the production curve flattened. Then on September 23, 2022, in his Cardinals farewell year, he hit his 700th career home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers and became the fourth player in MLB history to reach 700, after Barry Bonds (2007), Hank Aaron (1974), and Babe Ruth (1934). The 700-club entry reset the entire Pujols comp lattice within a 30-day window.

Before getting into per-product pricing, two pieces of HobbyCardIndex framework apply. First is the grading decision framework, the same should-I-grade-this-card workflow we apply to every flagship MLB RC. Centering and corner risk on 2001 Topps Traded and 2001 Bowman Chrome are meaningful, and the breakeven math depends on a clean pre-screen. Second, if you are comparing Pujols pricing across platforms, our alternatives to CardLadder map shows where each platform draws its comp set from and what gets cut.

The 2001 Albert Pujols flagship rookie set, side by side

Eight core 2001 products carry a Pujols rookie or rookie-equivalent label. Prices below are public PSA 10 ranges trimmed of obvious outliers and pulled across the 90-day window prior to April 2026. They sit in the post-700-club band, not the pre-2022 baseline; Pujols cards moved up 60 to 100 percent in the 30 days after the milestone and have held the new floor since.

Read the table this way: 2001 Topps Traded #T247 is the comp-set anchor on the unsigned base side, with the deepest sold-comp depth at any given month (typically 80 to 150 PSA 10 sales per 90 days). 2001 Bowman Chrome Auto #340 is the comp-set anchor on the autograph side, the single tentpole that sets the high end of the Pujols market, and is the primary card the 700-club narrative attaches to. The other six fill in the comp lattice but do not anchor pricing on their own.

Per-product deep dive

2001 Topps Traded #T247

Topps Traded was the late-season Topps update product issued in November or December of the calendar year. It captured rookies who debuted mid-season after the flagship Topps set had already shipped. Pujols debuted April 2, 2001, after the 2001 Topps base flagship had locked, so his first Topps card is the Topps Traded #T247 issued late in 2001. The card shows him in his Cardinals home jersey at-bat. The base print is unannounced (Topps did not publish print runs for 2001 Topps Traded), but PSA pop reports through April 2026 show roughly 22,000 PSA 10 examples graded across all submission cycles, with a rising rate in the 2022 to 2024 window driven by the 700-club crack-and-resub effect.

Centering is the dominant grading risk. The 2001 Topps Traded set carried a top-edge print-line tilt that affected roughly 15 to 22 percent of the print run; cards that show this tilt grade out at PSA 8 or PSA 9 instead of PSA 10. If you are buying a raw Topps Traded T247 to grade, ask the seller for a full-card scan with edges visible and a corner-on photo. Surface specks on the lower right under the gold border are also common; an angled-light inspection of the borders is mandatory before submitting.

2001 Topps Chrome Traded #T247

Topps Chrome Traded was the chrome-stock parallel of the Topps Traded set. The chrome refractor coating gives the card a higher visual ceiling than paper Topps Traded, and PSA 10 supply is roughly one-quarter of the paper version. The base Chrome Traded T247 trades 900 to 1,400 USD in PSA 10. Refractor parallels (no published print run, estimated under 1,000 copies) trade 2,800 to 4,500 USD in PSA 10. Black Refractor Refractor /50 has cleared 8,000 to 14,000 USD when surfacing. The Topps Chrome Traded family is where Pujols paper RC value reaches the chrome ceiling.

2001 Bowman #266

Bowman 2001 was the early-season Bowman flagship that included Pujols as a Cardinals rookie. Card #266 shows him in batting practice. PSA 10 comp range is 200 to 320 USD, slightly below Topps Traded T247 because the Bowman 2001 base is a slightly heavier print. Centering is generally cleaner on Bowman 2001 than on Topps Traded; the PSA 10 rate sits one or two points higher. If you are price-sensitive on Pujols paper RC, Bowman 266 is the cheapest legitimate flagship and is structurally undervalued relative to Topps Traded on a per-card basis.

2001 Bowman Chrome #340 (non-auto)

Bowman Chrome 2001 #340 is the chrome-stock base of the Bowman Chrome Pujols card. PSA 10 supply is significantly thinner than 2001 Topps Traded; the print run is estimated at 50,000 to 60,000 copies based on case yields, and the PSA 10 rate sits at roughly 22 percent. Refractor parallels include the Refractor (no print run published, estimated /1500), X-Fractor (estimated /450), Gold Refractor /99, and Red Refractor /5. The Refractor PSA 10 trades 2,200 to 3,500 USD; Gold Refractor PSA 10 has cleared 12,000 to 18,000 USD when surfacing.

2001 Bowman Chrome Rookie Auto #340

This is the high-end Pujols flagship. The 2001 Bowman Chrome Auto features an on-card signature in blue ballpoint pen, which is structurally more durable than sticker-applied autographs from later eras. Print run on the base Auto is estimated at 600 copies (industry consensus, Topps did not publish). The Refractor Auto sits at /500, the Gold Refractor Auto at /99, and the Red Refractor Auto at /5. PSA 10 Auto 10 base trades 6,000 to 14,000 USD on a typical month, with the high end of the band hit during the November 2022 post-700 window. The Refractor Auto PSA 10 Auto 10 ran 18,000 to 32,000 USD post-2022. Gold Refractor Auto PSA 10 Auto 10 has cleared 80,000 to 110,000 USD in private sale. Red Refractor Auto /5 is the print-run ceiling and trades 200,000 to 350,000 USD in PSA 10 Auto 10.

2001 SP Authentic Future Watch #128 /1250

SP Authentic 2001 carried the Future Watch design with a numbered /1250 print run. Pujols #128 is in the standard SP Future Watch frame with the gold serial number. PSA 10 trades 1,200 to 1,800 USD; the print-run cap of /1250 sets a structural ceiling that prevents the card from compounding on supply expansion the way unannounced-print-run sets do. If you are looking for Pujols print-run-anchored pricing exposure (where you know the cap is fixed), SP Authentic 128 is the cleanest ladder-anchor in the 2001 family.

2001 Topps Heritage #422 and 2001 Topps Reserve #3

Topps Heritage 2001 was the first year of the Topps Heritage retro-design product line, modeled on the 1952 Topps base set. Pujols #422 is the Heritage RC at PSA 10 180 to 280 USD. Topps Reserve 2001 was a premium ultra-low-print Topps product; Pujols sits at #3 in the set with a print run estimated under 5,000 copies. Topps Reserve PSA 10 trades 1,400 to 2,200 USD and is the Topps premium-tier Pujols RC most collectors do not have.

2001 Fleer Authority Prominent Figures Rookie Auto #5

Fleer Authority 2001 Prominent Figures Rookie Auto #5 carries an on-card Pujols signature with a print run of /750. This is the alternative on-card auto RC outside the Bowman Chrome family. PSA 10 Auto 10 trades 2,800 to 4,500 USD. Some collectors prefer the Fleer Authority frame design and treat it as a sub-flagship; others prioritize the Bowman Chrome Auto for liquidity. Both are legitimate Pujols on-card auto RCs, but Bowman Chrome carries the deeper market.

Parallel ladder for 2001 Bowman Chrome Pujols Auto

The Bowman Chrome Auto parallel ladder is where the Pujols market hits its high-print tier. Print runs and comp ranges below come from the Topps published parallel structure for 2001 Bowman Chrome plus PSA pop-report data through April 2026.

2001 Bowman Chrome Albert Pujols Rookie Auto #340 parallel ladder (PSA 10 Auto 10 ranges)
ParallelPrint run (estimated where unpublished)PSA 10 Auto 10 comp range (USD)Note
Base Auto~600 copies (industry estimate)6,000 to 14,000Flagship comp anchor; highest comp depth
Refractor Auto50018,000 to 32,000The most-collected Auto RC parallel

Red Refractor Auto5200,000 to 350,000 private saleThe 1/5 print ceiling

The lattice runs roughly 2.5x to 3.5x per print-run-tier reduction on the autograph side. The base Auto to Refractor Auto step (600 to 500 print) is closer to a 2x because the print runs are similar; the Refractor to Gold Refractor step (500 to 99) compounds on visual chase as well as scarcity and gives the bigger 4x to 5x jump. Pricing on Red Refractor Auto /5 is a thin private-sale band; any single auction outcome can drift outside the band by 30 to 50 percent.

If you are new to thinking in print-run-tier terms, start with our what is a parallel guide, then move to what is a refractor for the chrome-stock physics that drive Refractor pricing across the Bowman Chrome line.

How PSA 9 vs PSA 10 changes Pujols pricing

Across the 2001 Pujols flagship line, the PSA 9 to PSA 10 multiplier sits at roughly 3x to 4x for paper Topps Traded T247 (PSA 9 trades 70 to 110 USD, PSA 10 trades 250 to 450 USD), narrows to 2.5x for Bowman 266 because that card has a higher PSA 10 rate, and widens out to 5x to 6x on Bowman Chrome (non-auto) 340 because PSA 10 supply on the chrome stock is structurally thinner. On the Bowman Chrome Auto, PSA 9 Auto 10 trades roughly 2,000 to 3,500 USD versus PSA 10 Auto 10 at 6,000 to 14,000 USD, a 3x to 4x band that compounded post-700.

Raw to PSA 10 multiplier on Topps Traded T247 is closer to 6x. A clean raw Pujols Topps Traded trades 35 to 60 USD; a PSA 10 trades 250 to 450 USD. Subtract out the 25 to 30 USD all-in grading basis at the PSA Value tier, and the breakeven probability for PSA 10 needs to clear roughly 22 percent for the math to work. Centering risk on 2001 Topps Traded makes that a coin-flip on raw cards that have not been pre-screened, but a moderate edge on cards where the corners and centering are clean to the eye.

For the same math applied across other modern MLB rookies, see our raw vs graded guide. For the version applied across PSA Value vs Express vs Walkthrough tiers, the grading decision framework walks through breakeven percentage by tier and card category.

Career arc and the price cycle on Pujols RCs

Pujols has driven a multi-phase comp-set cycle worth knowing if you are timing a sale or a buy. Phase one, 2001 to 2010, runs the unanimous Cardinals MVP-caliber decade with three MVPs (2005, 2008, 2009), six top-five MVP finishes, and two World Series titles (2006, 2011). The 2001 RC set traded at the standard early-career flagship band during this period, with Topps Traded PSA 10 averaging 80 to 130 USD and Bowman Chrome Auto PSA 10 Auto 10 averaging 1,800 to 3,200 USD.

Phase two, 2012 to 2021, was the Angels compression. Pujols signed a 10-year, 240 million USD contract with the Los Angeles Angels in December 2011 and his production declined steadily through age 33 and 34, then plateaued in the average-to-below-average band through 2020. PSA 10 comps on Topps Traded T247 compressed to a 60 to 90 USD floor across most of the Angels years. Bowman Chrome Auto PSA 10 Auto 10 ran 1,500 to 2,500 USD as the narrative softened.

Phase three, 2022, was the structural reset. After being released by the Angels in May 2021, Pujols had a one-year stop with the Dodgers in 2021, then signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals in March 2022 for a farewell year. He hit his 700th career home run on September 23, 2022, against the Dodgers, joining the 700 club with Bonds, Aaron, and Ruth. PSA 10 comps on Topps Traded T247 jumped from 150 to 220 USD baseline up to 320 to 480 USD by November 2022. Bowman Chrome Auto PSA 10 Auto 10 jumped from 4,500 to 6,500 USD baseline up to 9,000 to 13,000 USD post-700.

Phase four, 2023 through April 2026, has been the post-700 stable band with mild compression from the 2022 peak. Pujols retired after the 2022 season, was inducted onto the Cardinals Hall of Fame August 2023, and his 700-club narrative has held the new floor as the Hall of Fame countdown begins. He becomes eligible for the National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot in 2028 (five years after retirement). The expected first-ballot induction in 2028 is a likely additional comp-set catalyst worth tracking. For the broader read on durable narrative as a card-pricing input, our K-shape 2026 report has the full structural analysis on which players and which years held value through 2024-2026.

Pre-rookie cards and the 2000 Pujols question

Pujols did not have a national-distribution Topps or Bowman card prior to 2001. The 2000 Bowman product cycle did not include him; the 2000 Bowman Chrome Draft Picks & Prospects subset stopped before the late-round 13th-pick range that captured Pujols. There are some 2000 minor-league issues from his Peoria Chiefs Class A season (Multi-Ad Sports Peoria Chiefs team set) and his Potomac Cannons Carolina League stop, but these are minor-league issues, not nationally-distributed flagship products, and they do not carry MLB rookie status.

If you see a 2000 Pujols card listed as a rookie on eBay or another platform, treat it with suspicion. The most common pattern is a 2000 minor-league team-issue card sold at flagship-RC pricing; that is a buyer-beware setup. The 2001 Topps Traded T247, 2001 Bowman 266, 2001 Bowman Chrome 340, and 2001 SP Authentic 128 are the canonical flagship RCs and the only cards that should be priced on the rookie comp lattice.

Authentication and the trim risk on 2001 Pujols cards

Pujols RCs sit in a price band high enough to attract counterfeit and trim attempts, especially after the 700-club catalyst. The five most common patterns we see in the wild:

One, fake auto on a real Bowman Chrome base. Counterfeiters take a real 2001 Bowman Chrome 340 (non-auto) base, add a forged signature in blue ballpoint pen, then list as a Bowman Chrome Auto. PSA and BGS catch this on grading because they cross-reference signature pattern against on-file Pujols autographs from the 2001 to 2003 window. eBay raw sales of high-end Bowman Chrome Auto cards that look too clean for the listed price band are the highest-fraud-risk channel; treat any sub-comp Bowman Chrome Auto raw with extreme skepticism.

Two, trimmed Topps Traded T247. Centering tilt on 2001 Topps Traded is meaningful enough that some sellers have shaved one edge to fake a 50/50 centering profile. PSA caught this pattern in 2018 and now flags any 2001 Topps Traded base with an asymmetric stock-thickness reading at the trim line. Buy raw Topps Traded T247 only from sellers with verifiable comp history and original packaging or pack-fresh provenance.

Three, refractor recolor. Pre-2024 there was a small fraud ring that took 2001 Bowman Chrome 340 base, applied refractor-style overlay using a transfer technique, and re-listed as Refractor. The fraud was caught when grading services started measuring edge-line foil consistency on chrome stock. Modern raw Bowman Chrome Refractor should always be inspected under angled light before purchase.

Four, reback. A subset of recently-cracked PSA 9 Pujols cards have been resubmitted under different identities in an attempt to upgrade. Crossover from PSA 9 to PSA 10 across grading services on 2001 Pujols flagship cards has roughly an 11 percent rate, low enough that the math does not work, but it does drive a small fraud signal when surfaces show micro-scratch patterns inconsistent with original-pack-fresh provenance.

Five, counterfeit Topps Reserve. Topps Reserve 2001 was a low-print premium card and the print run was short enough that copies of fake Reserve issues have circulated in eBay raw listings. The cardstock weight on a real 2001 Topps Reserve is heavier than standard Topps Traded; weighing the card before purchase is a quick first-pass authentication.

Our spotting fake cards guide has the five-tool authentication workflow we apply to every flagship MLB RC.

Sealed 2001 Topps and Bowman product

Sealed 2001 Bowman Chrome Baseball carries some of the highest sealed-wax pricing of the 2001 era because Pujols and Ichiro Suzuki are both in the set. As of April 2026, sealed pricing approximates: 2001 Bowman Chrome Hobby box around 4,500 to 6,500 USD (originally MSRP near 95 USD), sealed Hobby cases cleared 50,000 USD in late 2022. 2001 Topps Traded factory sets trade 200 to 350 USD and contain the Pujols T247 base; this is the cheapest path to a pack-fresh raw Topps Traded Pujols. 2001 SP Authentic Hobby boxes trade 800 to 1,200 USD.

Sealed-wax investing is a different skill set than card investing. Print runs on sealed product are not published, the demand curve compounds with rip rate (more rips equal more singles, fewer sealed boxes), and the BBCE-graded "AUTH" certification is the de-facto authentication standard for sealed wax. If you are unsure about the sealed product framework, hold flagship singles instead. The 2001 Bowman Chrome Hobby box is the single highest-conviction sealed-wax target in the Pujols family because it contains both Pujols and Ichiro RC autograph odds.

How we built this hub

HobbyCardIndex methodology on a player-focused hub follows three rules. One, every comp range cited above comes from a public sold-listing source: eBay sold filters with LH_Sold=1 and LH_Complete=1, Goldin auction archives, PWCC auction archives, and Heritage auction archives, trimmed of obvious shill or relisting outliers. Two, comp ranges are 90-day windows ending April 2026 unless explicitly noted as a different period (the November 2022 post-700 peak band, for example). Three, no proprietary HCI valuations appear here; this hub is built on public-tier data so every claim is independently verifiable.

For more on the public-comp methodology, including the seven outlier rules we apply, see our eBay sold comps report. For the broader independence framing on why HobbyCardIndex does not own a marketplace, breaker, or grader, see our independence pledge.
